New Year 2021 Japanese Style

Happy New Year! A different kind of post today. I'd like to share a part of my heritage with you. Being Japanese-American, I have the advantage to celebrate two kinds of traditions. This being OSHOGATSU (known as New Year but the direct translation is January!), we celebrate with decor, food, games, and being with family. 🎍 🍴💖

Decor

Let's start with the Kagami Mochi display which is a modern version of the original. Most homes in Japan have them for the New Year. The two white round shapes are mochi (rice cakes) symbolizes the outgoing and incoming years. The orange/mikan (daidai) symbolizes generation to generation. The whole arrangement together takes the meaning of long life, family bonds, and continued family generation. The image of an ox underneath stands for the year of the ox (2021). Japanese also uses the Chinese zodiac, a 12-year cycle of zodiac signs. Google search and you'll find some fun facts! What animal are you?

Foods

New Year's Foods are known as Osechi Ryori (direct translation: special season cooking). Foods are prepared days in advance to avoid cooking on New Year's Day. All are housed in a stack of boxes called Jyubako (think stacking bento boxes). There are many different kinds of foods with each having a meaning. But I won't go into that or you'll be reading for days! LOL!! Here's our spread - thanks to my husband and our local Japanese market

Games

There are many games that families play (and not much different from here in the U.S.) such as board games but there are games such as Go and Shogi (think Japanese style chess + checkers). A few years ago, I created a Hagoita (think Badminton) for a craft manufacturer. For the tutorial, click Japanese New Year Hagoita Tutorial.

I hope that you learn something interesting today! To you, my readers, I THANK YOU SO MUCH for taking the time to read, comment, and support my blog.

From our family to yours, wishing for an even better & healthy year! Stay safe!

Much love,
MargieH xo

JAPAN in November!

Hey all! Didn't realize it's been a month since I last posted...most of November I've been away in Japan. My mother was seriously ill at the beginning of the year and recently started doing rehabilitation (aka starting walking again, etc.) - won't go into details but she is making her slow and good recovery :) I went to harass her and made sure she was doing what she should be! LOL!!

We walked almost every day for two weeks and for SEVERAL HOURS! Her weekly rehab has nothing on us! HA! These are several images that are around my mom's neighborhood....for those who are familiar with Tokyo - it's the Azabu Juban area. WARNING: PICTURE HEAVY!

My mom's apt building

Azabu Juban Entrance/Subway Sta.

Juban Open Market

Mt. Fuji at Sunset (sorry - bad picture)

Tokyo Tower

Most of these pictures were not shared on FaceBook because they were in my NIKON DSLR! LOL!! Hopefully I can get back there in June 2015 - fingers crossed. Hoping to post more soon but have CHA prep work to do which has taken up my time and holiday - no turkey this year. Hanging in there :)

Thanks for visiting!

My Japan Trip (May 2014): Manza Onsen Hot Springs

This is part 3 of My Japan Trip (May 2014)! If you like to catch up, click on to each blog post title below (don't forget to click on images a larger view):

After saying good-bye to my mother-in-law, we packed up a bag to take for our vacation. The bigger one was taken to our neighborhood 7Eleven who can arrange our bag to be delivered to Narita Airport via Takyubin (similar to a UPS/FedEx). LOVE the efficiency of Japan! LOL!

Then we took the train up to Ueno Station and hopped on the Kusatsu Limited Express Train - a three hour ride to our destination, Manza.

What's a train ride without an EkiBen (aka train station bento box lunch)?! I got the #1 favorite of one store and Hosho got one that can be heated without a microwave - a heating component in the bottom of the box! It works! Only in Japan - LOL!

This was our dessert (we should've gotten more!) - a flaky pastry with light cream and sweet bean paste called Danish Panda. OMGosh, so good!

It rained when we arrived - not a good start but once we got to the hotel, everything was just right. Our room had an amazing view of the hot springs puffing smoke through the earth. Now you don't see that everyday!

After taking our hot spring baths, we joined the other guests for a buffet style dinner. Although not romantic, it was fun to eat a Japanese food buffet! FUN! Notice everyone is wearing the same thing...most Japanese hotels will provide these YUKATAs to use as pajamas and to walk around town in. Less to pack!

The next day it was SO NICE out Hosho had this great idea to go hiking. For those who know me, I don't hike! LOL!! He said it will only be 20 mins - HA! Try more than double that time. BUT it was worth it.

He took me to Mt. Kusatsu Shirane, an active volcano (he forgot to mention that part until later!) to see Yugama Crater Lake (known for its high acidic content).

See the little road next to me with the sign (first picture - click on images for larger view)? That hiking trail I was supposed to take (it's an easy 10 min hike) was close due to POISONOUS GAS! Really?! Why are we here?! OY~!

ARE WE THERE YET? 20 mins later....
This is Yugama Crater Lake with its beautiful (& POISONOUS GAS..did I mention that already?) turquoise blue surface...

After walking down and back to the bus stop, we were off to our next destination...KUSATSU!

Sorry - that's another post :)
To be continued - thanks for reading!

My Japan Trip (May 2014): Tokyo Days - Part 2

Continuing from My Japan Trip (May 2014): Tokyo post, I am going to summarize the one week stay into one post here :)

Since my husband was on a business trip the first part of our stay, he left right after dinner to check in to the hotel closest to his meetings. But we ended up seeing each other every night for various obligations - client dinner, family dinner, etc.

Wednesday
Spend the day with my mom and had some great conversation. OK, I admit it's nice to just to sit and have a talk. Kind of hard on the phone overseas...good quality time. Met up with Hosho at Ebisu Station and walked over to his client's office for a chat. Later we had dinner at one of his client's restaurants. YUM!

Thursday
That day was dedicated to scrapbooking! LOL! My friend who I haven't seen in about nine years lives near Memory Place (Ikebukuro) - the next station over. So we met up at the store and went to lunch. SO EXCITED to see her :) I went a little earlier to bring my artwork/samples and to "play." Such a fun store - I totally recommend if you are in Tokyo :)

I created my travel journal with a $1 note pad! It has contact names, schedule and places I wanted to visit. The cover was created with all sorts of favorite goodies - hint: Hazel & Ruby, Marion Smith Designs, Teresa Collins, Want2Scrap and of course, Spellbinders & Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft! I still have it and it is in wonderful shape :)

Many of my favorite manufacturers were in the house! I spy Spellbinders® Creative Arts Die D-Lites™ die templates and Faber-Castell® Design Memory Craft® Gelatos® = LOVE!!!!

My newest purchase was these wonderful title chipboard created by the amazingly talented Asuka Miyamoto! I had the store keep these for me as they were sold out twice when they came in.

Friday
Looked forward to seeing the rest of the family :) We all met up at ANA Intercontinental Hotel for a dinner buffet - perfect for a group dinner! Great food and great company - what a wonderful time! Thank you, Dan and David, for making it happen. This girl is lucky to have two wonderful brothers :)

Saturday
My mother-in-law from Fukui Pref. came into town to see us (and my mom - lol!). She is SO funny and easy going. My mom's apartment building has several guest rooms (think hotel) and we were able to get one for her to stay in. We had a great time - although short, we were able to see some Tokyo sights too.

Then it was Monday and we had to good-bye to my mother-in-law.
AND it was the START OF VACATION!! Off to ONSEN (Hot Springs) Adventure! WOOHOO~!!

Stay tuned to another post...sorry! LOL!!
Thank you for visiting!

My Japan Trip (May 2014): Tokyo

My husband and I went on a trip back to Japan without kids and for two weeks. We were both nervous about having them alone for that long but both are old enough and my college friend was on call :) Luckily, the house was standing and nothing was damaged! HA!

We started off with these gin & tonics before getting on that 12+ hour flight...we needed it! LOL!!!

We took the later ANA (All Nippon Air) flight into Narita Airport (landed the next day at 8:00pm) and ran to get the rental phone as the place closed down at 9:00pm. Made it! LOL!! By the time we settled in our hotel in Narita, it was around 10:30pm. So we ate a light dinner at Watami...more like appetizers. I had a seasonal drink...squeeze fresh orange juice into your drink = YUM & Refreshing :)

The next morning, we took the Narita Express and headed into Tokyo - OY! Note to self: Do not go into Tokyo Station during Rush Hour!! Get off at a less crowded (?) Shinagawa Station and cab it to my mom's! LOL!! But before we headed off, we stopped by Mr. Donuts!! Yes, folks - they are alive and well in Japan! I had a green tea donut - OMGosh! Not as sweet as it looks and oh so yummy :)

Hardly any passengers on this particular train - too early! LOL!

We arrived in Tokyo Station down in the fifth level basement (I think?) - the calm before the storm upstairs! YIKES!

Once we arrived at my mom's, we decided to explore the Azabu Juban area and grab some lunch. We had a craving for homemade buckwheat soba and ended up here at Sarashina Horii (est. 1789, closed due to World War 1 and reopened in 1984). Unlike most buckwheat soba which is gray in color, their soba is white (using the very center of the buckwheat) which they are known to be the first to use.

Did some more walking and then took a nap when we got back. Before we knew it, it was dinner time! We headed back to Azabu Juban and wandered into this funky Izakaya place called Era Kokyu...we had only a couple of appetizer to make room for...

Afuri Ramen! My first time tasting it - they really don't need the Yuzu rind IMHO but that's what they're known for - LOL! It's good without it - the pork was amazing (they grilled it = YUM!).

And that my friends, was our first day/night in Tokyo :)
Thanks for stopping by!

ScrapMart: Ironworks Card

Today I am sharing a card I created for a consumer show in Japan, I wanted something that was striking in color so black and white with touches of red and gold were my choices.

Ironworks Card by Margie Higuchi
Supplies - Cardstock: WorldWin Papers; Pearls: KasierCraft; Dies: Spellbinders™ Paper Arts (S5-059 Ironwork Motifs; E8-006 Classic Petal); Adhesive: ScraPerfect; Other: Foam Tape

Using Ironworks Motifs die cuts, I layered to create a wonderful center accent for the card. Edge the card with Edgeabilities and it becomes even more amazing! Love those Edgeabilities dies!! Add a bit of pearls and you're all set.

All of these are available at Scrap-mart.com:

Scrap-Mart: Japan

Hey all. Today is my turn to post for Scrap-Mart. I also wanted to point out that it is the first anniversary of Japan's TSUNAMI disaster. My heart is heavy for the people in the northern region of Japan (the TOHOKU Region). Although there has been good progress, there are many who still cannot return to their homes. Some will never be able to go back. I hope the Japanese government will work FASTER to get them a place where they can call HOME. I AM THANKFUL EVERYDAY that my family and my husband's family are safe.

My brother came to visit Chicago on his business trip two months after the disaster and I was thrilled to see him. We rarely see each other so I took a picture. A few days ago, I happened upon it. Taking my most recent favorite collection, My Mind's Eye Follow Your Heart Collection I created a 12 x 12" page using 6 x 6" paper :0)

siblings 2011 by Margie Higuchi
Supplies - Cardstock: American Crafts; Patterned Paper: My Mind's Eye (Follow Your Heart Collection); Glittered Chipboard Alphas: American Crafts; Buttons: October Afternoon; Stamp: A Jillian Vance Design; Ink: Clearsnap; Embossing Ink: VersaMark (TSUKINEKO); Embossing Powder: American Crafts; Liquid Pearl: Ranger; Dies: Spellbinders Paper Arts (E8-008 Classic Edges Two, E8-012 Classic Decorative Inserts Four, S5-079 Persian Motifs and S5-025 Labels Seventeen); Adhesive: ScraPerfect (The Best Glue Ever); Other: Foam tape
I'm loving the Spellbinders Edgeabilities!! Do you know notice all the different borders? They are from two sets - the Classic Edgers and the Classic Decorative Inserts Four!!! But you can inter-change them to create more designs (versatility and value!). Like I said LOVE THEM!!!!

I added a shaped card below that I created in commemoration of Japan's disaster. The details are posted in ScraPerfect's A Card For Japan post a couple of days ago. My friend, Peggy Ruiz, is a Close To My Heart (CTMH) consultant and told me about CTMH selling a stamp set with proceeds going to the Japan Relief Fund.

One Month Anniversary Yesterday...

since the TOHOKU Region (Japan) diseaster...more stronger aftershocks, a 7 rating at FUKUSHIMA DAI-ICHI Nuclear Plant last night, SO MANY people still in shelters...a month later.

I have donated to many organizations but this one is close to my heart - my alma mater, The American School In Japan (ASIJ), located in Tokyo. I am ALWAYS proud to be an alumna of this great institution BUT I am EVEN MORE PROUDER after reading what the school has done and step up to help the people in the TOHOKU Region.

I received an email from the school early this morning which I'd like to share with you...

"Japan Relief Update: April 12
It has now been a month since the March 11 disater and in the last few weeks our community has really come together to respond to the situation in Tohoku. The ASIJ community and our friends, including international schools and organizations from all over the world, have already contributed over $65,000 directly into the ASIJ Japan Relief Fund. These funds are supporting our own direct relief efforts in northern Japan. If you would like to make your own contribution, please click here.

With the money raised already we purchased 400 desks and school supplies for four elementary and junior high schools in Ishinomaki City that lost everything in the earthquake and tsunami. Two faculty and staff relief trips to Tagajo and Kesenuma to take up specific supplies and cook dinner for over 360 people were also funded. For many survivors it was their first hot meal in a couple of weeks. Another group of 28 ASIJ employees will travel to Tagajo to volunteer and clean-up the homes of residents so they can move back to their neighborhoods. Long-term, we hope to identify schools in the Fukushima and/or Miyagi areas that ASIJ can assist in their rebuilding efforts.

Each of the school divisions has also started various collections: the Middle School and ELC are collecting ¥500 coins. The “ASIJ MS Cares” collection has already passed ¥189,000. Employees and students in the Elementary and High Schools have contributed and collected everything from toothbrushes to diapers and ready-to-eat food to yo-yos. A total of seven vans full of goods have been forwarded to our neighbor, the Tama Church, our long-time partner Second Harvest Japan, Tagajo City and most recently the Peace Boat—a Japan-based NGO that quickly organized deliveries up to hard-hit Ishinomaki City.

It’s been heart-warming to see how proud our students are when they drop their items into the collection box each morning and be a part of this good work. Students in grades 5 to 12 are also enjoying sorting and boxing the contributions and taking the packages to the RT lobby for dispatch. Everyone is clearly embracing the goal of helping folks up north as much as possible as quickly as possible.
Our PTAs, faculty, student councils and various student clubs are already raising money or are planning dozens of activities to help the ASIJ Japan Relief Fund, including a Futsal tournament just this past Saturday and today’s Variety Show, which evacuees being housed at Ajinomoto Stadium are invited. On April 24, there will be an alumni soccer tourney in support of the fund and many more activities will run through May, including the rescheduled Spring Gala on Sunday May 1.

At ASIJ, we believe in our mission of “developing compassionate, inquisitive learners prepared for global responsibilities.” There will never be a better time than now to live our mission and join hands with others. Thank you to everyone in our community who is helping us achieve this.

If you have any questions on any of these relief activities, or have ideas of your own, please contact the Alumni Office at alumni@asij.ac.jp.

If you would like to make a contribution to the Japan Relief Fund online, please click here."

Continued good thoughts and prayers to Japan :0)
Thanks for stopping by!

P.S. My family are still doing OK...some have plans to come to the States for summer break and in Chicago!! YEAH!! I can't wait to see them!
